1963 Topps Baseball Cards

Welcome To 1963 Topps Baseball Cards

It is generally agreed upon that the 1963 set is one of the finest baseball cards Topps ever produced. It is beloved for the vivid bold colors of the cards, the top-notch photography, and the classic design. The lower panel is contain the name and a smaller picture is so wide it extends to cover the bottom borer of the card, this layout was closely based on the design of the Topps 1953 set. The only drawback is the bright color of the lower panel is easily creased and damaged at the corners and wear and tear really shows up. There were 7 series in this set, and each series featured its own color schemes.

The card backs look almost as gorgeous as the fronts. The black lettering and gold ink really seem to pop against the solid white background of the card backs. The addition of complete career stats was a welcome return to something which had been missing with the 1963 set. The cartoon panel full of fun artwork and jokey information just add to the whole package.

Design aside, the content of the set is what really makes this one so great. There were a total of 576 different cards including loads of legendary players. Notably this was the last card set appearance for Stan Musial (card #250) and the first appearance for Pete Rose (card #537). The first 10 cards of the set make up the excellent League Leader subset. These include many of the top stars of the day and they are highly collectible.

PSA 8 rated cards from the first series (#1-109) are quite scarce. This is due to the fact that there were major centering and printing problems with series 1 printing runs. A Pedro Ramos, Marty Keough, Curt Simmons, or Dick Schoefield card in PSA 9 condition is nearly unheard of. The second series was much improved in terms of quality however. The centering and the picture quality were much sharper, unfortunately many of the series 2 cards were covered with `snow' or white specks which were the bane of printed sports cards in the early days. Cards 142-148 are the World Series subset which focuses on 1963`s matchup between the Yankees and Giants.

This set also delivers plenty of great examples of the beloved multiplayer cards. Star combos like #18 Buc Blasters (Clemente), #138 Pride of N.L. (Mays/Musial) #173 Bomber`s Best (Mantle), and #412 Dodgers Big Three (Koufax/Drysdale/Podres) don't disappoint. An even more fantastic multiplayer card is #242 labeled as 'Power Plus' featuring thrilling matchup of Ernie Banks and Hank Aaron.

Series #3 spans cards #197 to #283. Most of this series is pretty common and can be found at a low cost. That`s a great thing, because this series features a Mickey Mantle card and a Sandy Koufax!

Series 4 #284-#370 is quite scarce indeed and holds a high value. Many collectors closing in on having a full set are only short by certain cards in this series. The #340 Yogi Berra is nearly impossible to find for sale in a PSA 8 and should probably be listed at a value much higher than it currently is. The Don Rudolph #291, the Rookie Stars #324, the Jack Sanford #325, and the Dom Zanni #354 are some of the rarest cards of this series.

The MLB was really taking off and coming into its own in 1963. 2 new teams had been added to the AL in '61 and teams were added to the NL in '62. There were now major league ball clubs in every region of the country. The 1963 Topps set was the first to include all 20 team cards and laid end to end they are quite a spectacle.

There are plenty of PSA 8 cards to be found for series 5 #371-446. A whole cache of unopened vendor boxes of these cards emerged in the Nineties and came to market. This series is notable for the orange color of the name panels. Some highly desired cards from this series include the Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Bob Gibson, and Whitey Ford. Series 6 $447-522 cards are much scarcer. Most of the commons from this series are easy enough to find but some of the star cards are quite rare. These include Lou Brock, Willie McCovey and Harmon Killebrew.

With the 6 variations thrown in, a Master Set of the 1963 Topps were total 582 cards. There are at least 3 corrected error cards and 3 checklists which were double printed which are all hard to find.

The 7th series is probably the most famous series of the set. Here we have big names like Pete Rose, Bob Clemente, Duke Snider and Willie Stargell`s rookie card. Supposedly there were plans for a 22 card All Star subset which would bring the total up to 598 cards, but these never got produced before printing switched over for the football card season. In total this is one of the greatest Topps sets and there are only a handful of complete PSA 8 sets known to exist.
